A quick ink wash and matt varnish and my Dystopian Wars Prussian Empire Arminius Class Frigates are all finished!

My Sunday started a little earlier than anticipated. After watching a ho-hum rom-com with my wife last night I had to write a review and up-date my two other websites, FilmGuide and GameGuide. Just before shutting down the computer I glanced at the time, it was fast approaching midnight. I figured I had two options; I could crack open Dead Rising 2: Off the Record (which I have to review) or I could go to bed. In a moment of genius – or sheer madness – I grabbed a halogen desk lamp and chose the third option: work on putting my Cromwells together. Whilst this did work surprisingly well – I’m not normally tired at night – I did manage to super glue two of mt fingers together!

With most of the work done on my Cromwell Tanks and my wife having a lazy Sunday in bed with a book, I was able to go full steam ahead with my Dystopian Wars Prussian Empire Arminius Class Frigates. I’ve managed to finish painting them and will likely ink wash them later today. It’s a quick and nasty paint job but should do the business on the table.

The colour scheme I used (using Flames of War Vallejo paints) is as follows:

Undercoat: Black
Hull: German Grey
Planking: Flat Earth
Detailing: Brass
Hatches and detailing: Gun Metal
Superstructure: German Field Grey

As per usual, my day was used up on a variety of non-hobby activities, but once these were over I did managed a little time with my new Dystopian Wars toy boats, as well as managing to break open my second Flames of War Cromwell Tank Platoon.

After finishing off undercoating my boats and cleaning up and attaching the treads to my Cromwell bodies, I decided to start on the actual painting of my Prussian Empire Arminius Class Frigates. I decided to use German Grey as my base colour, but realised after pouring some paint into my painting tray, that I had lost too much light with the day getting on, and painting dark grey onto a black base was going to be a mission to decipher how well I was going. But the paint was poured so I decided to go for it. Tomorrow will tell if this was a good idea or not.

Tomorrow I’m hoping to be able to attach the mudgaurds to my Cromwells and (fingers crossed) finish my Frigates.

Weekend’s never go to plan, especially when you have to take your wife to craft market on the Saturday and wok on the garden Saturday afternoon and Sunday as well as family time. But despite the many interruptions to my weekend I did mange to get a few things done. With the arrival of my Dystopian Wars Prussian fleet on Wednesday, I knew that everything else I was doing – or planning on doing – would be put on hold till these babies were painted. of course I had to free up a couple of painting stations first, so it was finally time to get round to gluing the tracks onto my Tiger Tanks. THis did go as smoothly as I had hoped, but we go there in the end.

I managed to clean up all my ships and begin undercoating them – the cleaning up took a hell of a lot longer than anticipated due to the amount of flash and stuff attached to the models. But I got part way through the undercoating before it was family time again, which lead into the RWC Semis.

As well as working on my Prussians, I decided to have a go at making some islands, I’ll let the pictures tell the story, but in hindsight, they are on the way too small scale…

Yes, yes, yes, I know I’m not allowed to buy any new models this year, due to my seldom mentioned year of frugal gaming, but through a bit of wheeling and dealing (I traded some XBox games with a mate) I’ve managed to order a
Prussian Fleet from Spartan Games Dystopian Wars range. However, the deciding point for choosing the Prussians was the cool looking Metzger Robot (Waterlined Version). I didn’t know the stats or anything important like that, it just looked cool. I had to have one. Or two, because they come in packs of two.

The only problem is, that by the time I made it to the checkout, the Robots were out of stock.

Now I’m having to play the waiting game.

The good news is that at last night’s semi-regular gaming night, we played a quick trial game of Dystopian Wars using cardboard tokens, and it turned out to be a lot of fun, and promises to be a bit of a tactical challenge.
