I was finishing off my Metzger Robots, and in my painting tray just happened to be a Flames of War tank turret. My middle daughter comes along and excitedly picks up the turret and immediately drops it. Bugger.

I didn’t get a whole lot of painting done this weekend. On Saturday it was my 40th Birthday Party, so the day was spent getting the house tidy and going into town to get last minute food items. It was a good party, but we stayed up far to late and suffered for it this morning. After a late rise the house demanded we tidy it up again, as it looked worse than it did before we had tidied it yesterday – party’s do that to a house!

But this afternoon I did find a little time to put some paint down on my Tigers. First however I had to evict a tiny spider who had decided to take up residence under the mud flap of one of my Tigers! Then I dry brushed the Tigers with a 50/50 mix of green ocher and white. Once that was dry, it was time to try out my cheap I-don’t-have-an-airbrush approach to tank camo: the common sponge. First came the brown, then the green.

I’m happy enough with the results – a lot better than the hard edge I would have had had I used brushes, though the nature of the sponge makes it far more appealing from a distance than close inspection. It should look even better with some detailing and an ink wash.

The weekend was a busy one, though it didn’t really start the way I anticipated, it did finish well. Saturday morning the wife was supposed to be going out with a friend, and my oldest daughter was supposed to be baby sitting the friends kids. She was supposed to keep them entertained in the rumpus room so I could get some painting done. You can probably guess that no painting got done on Saturday. Sunday however was a different story. It was still a busy day, but by my standards I got a fair bot of painting done.

First I laid down some flesh on the first six of my Malifaux crew (I’m painting them in two separate batches). This produced mixed, patchy results because I wasn’t laying it on thick over the black undercoat as I normally would. I wanted to try something different with these beasts.

Then I mixed some Flat Earth with Flesh to make a dark wash and added that to the ‘human’ figures, adding some green into the mix for the Necropunks.

The mix was pretty much just an experiment, and seemed to work ok.

Next up was highlighting with a mix of White and Flesh, which seemed to work out quite good on the humans.

Adding some green to the mix and highlighting the Necropunks had varied results and I’m thinking of adding another wash, this time Dark Green.

In between adding washes and highlights to my Malifaux crew, I managed to paint the webbing and base coat the helmets on my Airborne chaps. It was a bit of a mission swapping from 32mm down to 15mm though.

I was also able to put a couple of coats of base colour on my Tigers in between everything else. Though the photo was taken before the second coat.

Having several projects on the go at the same time enabled me to add some variety to my painting, meaning I got more done than I normally would. Having kids of an age where I can leave my paints and models on the dining room table for the course of the day whilst I did everything else that the weekend required on me was also great. Being able to keep everything handy in a cupboard, rather than tucked away in my office, far from where I paint is also a huge benefit.

I still have a long way to go before I’ve completed everything I’ve set out to do in this year of Frugal Gaming, but I’m more motivated at the moment, and trying new painting techniques that seem to be working, so things are looking good.

I almost for got to add that I did a bit of work on the first of my 28mm Western Buildings, tweaking the structural design of the piece. Unfortunately I have a very busy week at work this week, so probably won’t get to construct it anytime soon.

The whole crew – though some do need touching up in those hard to spray places!

The ever so evil Dr. Douglas McMourning.

A very nasty looking Necropunk.

Everyone one needs a sexy nurse with a gigantic syringe!

And finally, who doesn’t need a morgue assistant with a huge buzz saw…

This afternoon, I managed to score a couple of hours to ferret around with my models.  To begin with I cleaned and then glued to their bases three more of my Malifaux chaps.  Tomorrow I’ll hopefully have time to clean up and finish the initial basing reading for undercoating.

Then I used some of the left over DAS to begin basing four more small Flames of War bases for my long overdue British Airborne army.  I’m getting to the last of my DAS which I bought years ago, but has lasted well wrapped up and kept air-tight in one of my wife’s Tupperware containers.

Then I whipped out the old paint brush and highlighted the undercoat on a handful of British Airborne chaps who have been hanging around since March 2009.  I can see it’s going to be a challenge getting back into painting 15mm – these chaps are bloody small!

After cleaning my brush I decided to construct one of my paper terrain models that I hadn’t gotten around to constructing, only to find out it was a duplicate of one I had already built sometime last year!

Hopefully I can keep my momentum going and actually finish some projects this year and rekindle my love of modeling and playing.
