This strategic rail center, fiercely defended by German paratroopers, corked up the Normandy bottleneck for almost two months. In eight days of bitter fighting the Americans hurled their troops and their bombers against the town. When they broke through, US armor swept clear across France. St. Lo went down in history as a great battlefield. But all that was left to remind the town of its greatness was this cathedral standing in a pile of it’s own rubble.
